There are many reasons for choosing a cycling holiday destination, many expectations and different tastes to be satisfied. There is a also a lot of roads to choose from! Most of them already discovered and very popular with cyclists. However, special places do exist, small jewel boxes, where nature and history come together to take your breath away. Our tour in Vale Camonica will take you on undiscovered routes that will make you the envy of your cycling friends. Allow us to inspire you and feel for yourself the very passion and culture that is found in Italy’s best kept cycling secret.
The accommodation is a scenic 45 minute drive from Bergamo Airport. We recommend this airport as it maximises your time on Saturday in Italy. We do however, also pick up from Milan Linate and Verona, both of which are 1 hour 20 minutes away. Depending on your arrival time we suggest having something to eat whilst our mechanic makes up your bike. Once refueled, we think it’s always good to get out for a light ride in the afternoon/evening. It’s important to get accustomed to riding on the ‘wrong’ side of the road and get your bearings.
Your morning will start with a continental breakfast, and then we will aim to be up and out by 8:30am. After the initial 5 minute descent of Monteceretello we will head towards the ancient town of Pisogne. We will travel clockwise around Lago d’Iseo towards Marone, where we will pick up the new 5 km cycle path which runs alongside the lake shoreline. As we rejoin the road we will head through the historic villages of Sale Marasino, Sulzano and eventually ending up in Iseo for coffee and a brioche. This is a wonderful place to watch the world go by and watch the boats sailing to and from the harbour. The journey continues as we circumnavigate the lake winding through wonderful roads loomed over by magnificent cliffs and waterfalls. We will end our ride in Lovere where we will meet by the monument for photos and coffee.
After a relaxed continental breakfast we will aim to be up and out by 9:00 am. After the initial 5 minute descent of Monteceretello we will head towards the ancient town of Pisogne, and rather than head south to the lake, we will head east towards one of Italy’s most iconic climbs: Montecampione. The ascent is over 22km in total, with an average gradient of 8%! A coffee and time to savour the views is a must. We highly recommend taking photos as your friends won’t believe how beautiful it is!
After breakfast we descent the now familiar switch backs down to the Lake. Following the lake in an anti-clockwise direction we hug the banks of the lake before heading out to the world renowned wine region of Franciacorte. Steeped in history, this area of Italy has long produced a highly expensive sparkling wine that rivals Champagne. The route will take you through mile after mile of incredibly well maintained vineyards, and it is impossible not to stop and take a peek in one or more of the show rooms on display. As we return home we offer a number of bonus climbs for those more hardy cyclists. The majority however, may wish to work their way around the lake on the newly built cycle way.
The morning you probably have been waiting for, and you’re starting to wonder if all the training will pay off! Yes, it’s Gavia time. We leave at 9am and head by car to the beautiful alpine town of Ponte di Legno, approximately 50km from HQ. The climb itself is one you will never forget, truly iconic and for those that make it up the 16km single track in one piece can truly say they are a hardened cyclist. The descent that follows can’t be done without a photo stop or two. Only 55km of riding but maybe the finest you will ever do?
After breakfast we will head towards the town of Iseo before reaching the bottom of Polaveno, your last climb of the week, used by Chris Froome as a training ride when he rode for Barlowworld. Today’s ride will take in the beauty of the region with quiet roads, beautiful forests and views over looking Val Trompia to the east and Val Camonica to the north. The breathtaking descent cannot be done without stopping and taking a few photos and taking some time to take in the wonder of Italy.
The typical flights from Milan or Bergamo depart either late morning or early afternoon. This leaves you with the dilemma of going for one more quick spin up the mountain or down to the lake. Either way we will transport you back to your airport for emotional goodbyes, and transport your bike back home should you require this popular service.
