Elegant Piemonte cycling

It is hard to imagine a place more perfect to ride your bike and explore undiscovered Italy.

Piemonte is famous for elegant, nineteenth-century cafes and restaurants where the conversation flows freely, accompanied by delicious, locally-produced coffee, cocktails, chocolate, truffles, and wines – including world-famous crus like Barolo, Barbaresco, Asti and Roero. In the magical hills south of the capital, Turin, the wine-making tradition goes all the way back to the ancient Etruscans. The landscapes are perfect for cycling, and the vineyards, as well as the perfect backdrop, provide ideal fuel stops. Nowhere is so much pleasure to be gained from replacing the calories you burn in the saddle!

Stages of your Tour

  1. Leg-loosener ride

    15km, 260m

After our airport rendezvous, we head to our home for the week, the magnificent Tenuta Bussia hotel and vineyard between Barolo and Monforte d’Alba, two villages tiny in size but giant in wine-making history and reputation. After familiarising ourselves with the beautiful rooms and facilities, and possibly making plans involving the pool, sauna and hot tub, we will meet for formal introductions, then our guides will set up the bikes for our first, short ride to loosen the legs and get our first taste of the region, metaphorically and literally!

  2. Novello – La Morra - Barolo

    50km, 920m elevation.

A day to test your climbing legs or switch your E-bike setting to turbo! Our tough circuit visits four of the eleven villages in the Barolo wine production area: Monforte d’Alba, a member of the association of Italy’s most beautiful villages; Novello, with views of the snow-capped Alps; and the astonishing medieval village of La Morra, sometimes called ‘the balcony on the Langhe hills,’; and then the exhilarating descent back in Barolo for lunch before we head out on foot to sample truffle hunting with an expert and his dog.

  3. Roero Rolling ride

    55km, 900m elevation.

We drive 20 km north of Barolo to Guarene, recognised as one of Italy’s most gorgeous villages, then mount our bikes for another rolling ride. After yesterday’s rich Barolo reds, we have come to in Roero, known for its refreshing whites. The vines around us on today’s hillsides produce a grape called ‘arneis’, meaning ‘little rascal,’ because it is so difficult to grow. The road takes us from one medieval jewel to the next: towering Castellinaldo d'Alba, low-lying Canale and Montà, then, after another climb, Montaldo Roero and Baldissero d’Alba.

  4. Alba -MONFOR TE d’Alba

    47km, 800m elevation.

We ride down to the town of Alba, famous for its wine and its annual truffle fair, then make for two magnificent fourteenth-century castles. The first, at Grinzane Cavour, was once owned by Cavour, Italy’s first Prime Minister. After coffee in the courtyard, we climb up to Serralunga d’Alba to the second, then stop for lunch in Monforte d’Alba. After the ride to our hotel, we have a wine tasting in the Tenuta Bussia cellar. Then, how about a swim before dinner in Monforte d’Alba’s sumptuous Le Case della Saracca Restaurant?

  5. Barbaresco  - Neive

    50km, 1000m elevation

Another rolling itinerary between hilltop towns, starting with a short drive to beautiful Barbaresco, whose farmers sent grapes to Barolo for years before the penny finally dropped and they started making their own! We exit the Barbaresco wine-making area briefly into Castiglione Tinella and Mango, where they grow the Moscato grapes from which Asti Spumante is made. Any excuse! Our ride culminates in unforgettably evocative Neive, built around yet another castle, one of eight (we already know Barolo, Grinzane Cavour and Serralunga d'Alba) in the Castelli DOC circuit.

  6. Arrividerci & goodbyes

    no ride today

The day of reckoning has come. Our brief immersion in the winelands of southern Piemonte is over, and comparing the columns of calories consumed and calories burned can no longer be avoided! But final the balance has to include the friendships made, the moments of magic enjoyed, the volume of the laughter over dinner and the sheer beauty of the landscapes, which will surely stay in your eyes and ears for a long time to come. Then, when the reckoning’s done, it’s time to select your next Italy Bike Tours holiday!
