Stages of your Tour

  1. Benveneto

    30 km | 220m climb.

After the airport transfer to your hotel beside little-known Lake Iseo, perhaps most beautiful of the Italian lakes, our guides will set up your bikes and we will go on a leg-loosening ride towards the vine-covered hills to the south where Franciacorta sparkling white wine is made. From your dinner table, you will see a breath-taking view of the lake.

    Hotel Riva Lago - Sulzano

  2. giro d’lago

    65km | 100m CLIMB or 90km | 2190m (with montecampione)

A dream ride around the lake on roads built, say some, by Leonardo Da Vinci, then an optional ascent to the statue of another genius, the climber Marco Pantani at Montecampione, where the Pirate won the 1998 Giro. Later, a private viewing of ‘Accidental Death of a Cyclist’ with Matt Rendell, author of the book on which the film is based.

    Hotel Riva Lago - Sulzano

  3. stage 14 finish

    50 km | 1650m climb

After the lesser-known joys of Lake Iseo, today’s ride takes us to Desenzano, on the southern shore of Lake Garda, whose beauty is recognised across the world. There we will watch Stage 14, a potentially decisive 25.8 km time trial, from the perfect position, in the VIP area beside the finish line. On the way home, a vineyard dinner in beautiful Franciacorta.

    Hotel Riva Lago - Sulzano

  4. APRICA - STAGE 15 VIEW

    50km | 1650M climb

We ride from charming Capo di Ponte to the Alpine village of Aprica, a stage finish in past years and today the perfect mid-race point to see the riders pass. Then we drive to Bormio, beneath the towering Stelvio, where the dinner table will feature mountains of the local pasta, Pizzoccheri della Valtellina, the ideal carbo-loading for tomorrow’s epic ride.

    Miramonti Park Hotel

  5. Passo stelvio

    50km | 1570m climb.

Conquered in the 1950s by the inspirational Fausto Coppi, and in the 1960s by the extraordinary Charly Gaul, the Stelvio Pass is one of cycling’s most cherished trophies. As the Giro d’Italia enjoys a well-deserved rest day, we take to our bikes for the 21.5 km ascent of Italy’s highest paved mountain pass. You will remember every one of its 40 hairpins.

    Miramonti Park Hotel

  6. stage 16 start

    54 KM | 1840m climb

Between reaching the stage start at Livigno, we pass Italy’s highest village, Trepalle (6788 feet). The VIP area is a fanboy’s paradise: you are so close to the riders that you can steal selfies, collect autographs, even exchange words. After the stage start, we drive to the Dolomites then ride to beautiful Corvara, home of the famous Maratona dles Dolomites.

    Dolomiti Boutique Hotel

  7. selle ronde

    62km | 1870m climb

Corvara is on the Maratona dles Dolomites route, with four climbs: the Campolongo, the mythical Pordoi, Passo Sella and Passo Gardena. We ride half of the circuit, watch the Giro pass, then ride the rest to get home. It’s not hard to describe: it will be, quite simply, one of the most beautiful rides of your life. Easier said than done.

    Dolomiti Boutique Hotel

  8. passo valparola

    51km | 1390m climb

While the Giro heads for the flatlands south of the mountains, we continue our exploration of the stunning Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it comes as no surprise to hear, since 2009. We climb the Valparola Pass, the last of the seven which make up the annual Maratona dles Dolomites, and first included in the Giro d'Italia in 1976.

    Dolomiti Boutique Hotel

  9. sappada

    53km | 840m climb

We transfer to the beautiful Cadore valley and ride the stage route to the finish in beautiful Sappada, a member of the association of Italy’s most beautiful villages and, curiously, a tiny German language island. There, before the pros arrive, we ride across the finish line in front of the tifosi, and climb onto the podium to be photographed for posterity.

    Relais Le Betulle

  10. MONTE GRAPPA

    76KM | 2070m CLIMB

A UNESCO biosphere reserve in the Venetian Prealps, Monte Grappa is where Nairo Quintana secured victory in the 2014 Giro d’Italia, in a joyous festive atmosphere. The 2024 edition too will be decided there. We will ride from our hotel to the climb, and have a buffet lunch while watching the race on TV before the riders come past.

    Realis Le Betulle

  11. to rome……

    transit to rome

The Giro concludes with a ceremonial stage around the Eternal City, Rome. The morning train takes us across Italy into the city centre. After checking in to our hotel, we set out to explore the sights and then watch the finish. Then it’s out on the town for a final celebration in the Italian capital.

Riding in Northern Italy

The general road conditions in Northern Italy are good. The Giro is a very busy period as you would expect. We ride on mainly the Giro route so the roads will be partly closed with the Tifosi lining the route. When we are not on race route the roads are shared with vehicles and other cyclists.

Cuisine

The food, as one may expect, in Lombardy and Trento is excellent - some might say the best in Italy, there are a lot of local specialities that you can look forward to enjoying. Restaurants now cater for both vegan and vegetarians. Homemade local wines and beer a must to try.

Hotel Facilities

The hotels on this tour have spas and pools so we recommend bringing swimming costumes. The hotel also have good wifi and bar service. All our hotels have air conditioning. Hotels may charge extra for the use of these facilities.

Private Tours & Groups

We welcome the opportunity to discuss with you a private tour should you be in a group of more than six people. The private tour allows you to choose dates and personalise the itinerary according to your requirements.

Weather

The weather in May in Northern Italy is generally good. However in the high mountains the weather can change very quickly. Our highly experienced guides and tour managers will adjust the itinerary for the day accordingly if required, with safety as our paramount concern.
